BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- A second wave of COVID-19 infections in the fall and winter and the lack of further fiscal aid could make the U.S. economic recovery more gradual than hoped, a senior Federal Reserve official said Wednesday.
"Recent economic data have been encouraging, but I believe the most difficult part of the recovery is still ahead of us," Eric Rosengren, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, said in prepared remarks to the Boston Economic Club.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya said Wednesday that as 651 COVID-19 cases have been reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the national count to 30,097 with 16,430 recoveries and 469 deaths.
After the first case was detected in March, Libyan authorities closed the country's borders, shut down schools and mosques, banned public gatherings and imposed a curfew in order to curb infections.

KAMPALA -- Chinese hospitals will cooperate with a hospital in Uganda in an effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese embassy said here on Wednesday.
China's Yunnan Provincial Infectious Disease Hospital and the Third People's Hospital of Yunnan Province will establish a cooperation mechanism with the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital, the embassy said in a statement.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 1,372 cases of novel coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the national count to 449,903.
Meanwhile, 24 more patients died of the disease, bringing the death toll to 12,345.
The ministry also said that 907 people diagnosed with the disease are currently hospitalized in intensive care units with 680 on ventilators and 121 in critical condition.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal junior railways minister Suresh Angadi Wednesday died due to COVID-19, officials said.
The 65-year-old Angadi has died nearly two weeks after he tested positive for coronavirus infection. He was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi after his condition worsened.
He was the first federal minister to die due to COVID-19 infection.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Thursday.
Meanwhile, seven confirmed COVID-19 cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported, the commission said in its daily report.
No new suspected COVID-19 cases or new deaths related to the disease were reported, the commission said.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil on Wednesday reported 869 more deaths from the novel coronavirus, raising its national total to 138,977 since the start of the pandemic.
Tests also detected 33,281 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 4,624,885, according to the health ministry. ■
