Kathmandu, Nepal: A Nepal government official has announced that Kami Rita Sherpa has scaled Mount Everest for a record 26th time, surpassing his own record set last year.
Leading 10 other sherpas, Kami Rita, 52, scaled the 29,031.69-foot mountain this week along the traditional southeast ridge route.
"Kami Rita has broken his own record and established a new world record in climbing," announced Taranath Adhikari, director-general of the Department of Tourism in Kathmandu.
The climbing route used by the sherpas is the most popular for climbers and was pioneered by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
In 2022, Nepal issued the highest number of climbing permits for Everest in the peak season through May, totaling 316 permits, compared with 408 last year.
The Himalayan country, which relies heavily on climbers for foreign exchange, has been criticized for allowing overcrowding, and several climbers died on the mountains in 2019.
According to the Himalayan database, since it was first scaled from Nepali and Tibetan territory in 1953, Everest has been climbed 10,657 times, with many climbing multiple times, and 311 climbers have died.
