SYLHET, Bangladesh - The worst flooding in years forced authorities to close MAG Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and educational institutions in the affected areas on Friday, while mobile networks were also down for many, with the situation expected to worsen.
Sunamganj is cut off from the rest of the country. After floodwater submerged the roads, the road network to Sylhet began to collapse.
Due to the floods, the education ministry postponed Secondary School Certificate and equivalent exams across the country, which were scheduled to begin on Sunday.
The government deployed troops to speed up flood rescue, and relief efforts as the disaster management and relief ministry began its work.
"The main challenge is to rescue people and bring them to safety," said Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Mosharrof Hossain, who claims that 16 of the division's 40 districts are without power.
Atiqul Haque, director-general of the Department of Disaster Management, acknowledged the difficulties in the rescue operation, saying that a lack of boats hampered the rescue operation.
Power outages and a lack of fresh water are causing havoc in homes. On Wednesday afternoon, most of the roads in the area were submerged, and water entered houses at night, according to residents. Since then, the water level has been rising.
