DOHA, Qatar: Boeing secured its largest widebody aircraft deal this week, as Qatar Airways placed firm orders for 160 jets with options for 50 more, coinciding with President Donald Trump's visit to the Gulf nation.
The agreement, valued at US$200 billion, was announced in the presence of Trump and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, with Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer signing the agreement.
Trump, who described the transaction as the largest jet order in Boeing's history, said, "It's over $200 billion, but 160 in terms of the jets —that's fantastic. So that's a record, Kelly, and congratulations to Boeing. Get those planes out there, get them out there."
While details on the specific aircraft models were not disclosed, analysts estimate that the order could potentially include the 777X, Boeing's long-range aircraft. At catalog prices, 160 of the 777X jets would be worth approximately $70 billion, but substantial discounts are typically applied for bulk orders.
The deal was signed during Trump's second stop on a tour of Gulf states, following a series of agreements struck with Saudi Arabia this week.
Boeing and Qatar Airways have not yet responded to requests for further clarification regarding the aircraft models involved or whether the order includes firm commitments or options.
